Three protection methods of X-ray protective clothing

X-rays have good penetrability, because there are differences in density and thickness between human tissues. When X-rays pass through different tissues of the human body, the degree of absorption is different. Therefore, in the medical field, X-rays are widely used.

Of course, as we all know, x-rays have a certain amount of radiation. If the human body is exposed to a large amount of X-ray radiation, it will also cause diseases, gene mutations, etc. Therefore, this requires us to take precautions when using X-rays. X-ray protective clothing is a way to protect the human body from X-ray hazards. Then, the following will introduce the three major protection methods of X-ray protective clothing:

1. Distance protection

The radiation dose received by the surgeon can be reduced by increasing the distance between the surgeon and the radiation source (i.e. the focus of the bulb) and the scatterer (i.e. the subject of examination). The radiation dose can be reduced by 3/4 with each doubling of the distance. During fluoroscopic exposure, other personnel except the surgeon and the main assistant should stay away from the X-ray radiation source.

2. Shielding protection

Set up shielding between the radiation source and the staff to reduce or eliminate the radiation of the radiation, such as shielding with radiation protective clothing, lead aprons, lead caps, lead glasses, lead gloves, etc.

3. Time Protection

Radiation protective clothing can shorten the radiation time of X-rays as much as possible. Strict operating procedures should be formulated before the interventional operation to understand the relevant information of the patient and minimize unnecessary exposure. The cumulative exposure time of the intraoperative operation should not exceed 30min, and the irradiation conditions should be optimized to avoid repeated irradiation.

To sum up, X-ray protective clothing mainly includes three protection methods: distance protection, shielding protection and time protection. Different protection methods also have different protective effects. If the protection method is selected, it should be determined according to the situation.
